Dr. Orwell vs. General Utility

A passage from Elizabeth Hamilton's anti-Communist Memoirs of Modern Philosophers:

'General Utility, my dear Madam', said Dr. Orwell, smiling, 'is an ideal personage, a sort of Will o' the wisp, whom some people go a great way out of the road to find, but still see him shining in some distant and unbeaten track; while, if they would keep at home, and look for him in the plain path of christian duty, they would never miss their aim'.

Elizabeth Hamilton, Memoirs of Modern Philosophers (1800), III, 225.

(The critique is directed against William Godwin, the forefather of the modern Woke left and author of Political Justice).
