English abstract:

Sociobiology of the Man in Black

This paper examines the character of the Man in Black in Oliver Goldsmith's 'Chinese Letters', focusing on the dialectics between selfishness and altruistic behavior shown in these stories and likewise in other characters and stories by Goldsmith. This is set in the context of contemporary economic and moral ideas, particularly those of Adam Smith. These ideas on human nature and attitudes are also related to our current understanding of human sociability and behaviour as explained by evolutionary theory and sociobiology.

English Abstract: Review of Derek Bickerton's Adam's Tongue

This is an extensive review and commentary, in Spanish, of Derek Bickerton's book Adam's Tongue: How Humans made Language, How Language Made Humans (2009). The book puts forward an evolutionary theory of the origin of language (and mankind) which is attentive to the ecological functions of animal communication systems, and builds a bridge between linguistic emergentism and the theory of ecological niche-building (Lewontin, Odling-Smee et al.). Bickerton is particularly critical of Chomskian approaches to the issue of the origin of language, and of the current genetic bias in biology, which underestimates the behavioral adaptiveness and flexibility that allowed the emergence of language in a very specific ecological niche: collaborative scavenging.

Homo Homini Lupus

To descend to some more particulars, how many creatures are at deadly feud with men! lions, wolves, bears, etc., some with hoofs, horns, tusks, teeth, nails. How many noxious serpents and venomous creatures, ready to offend us with stings, breath, sight, or quite kill us! How many pernicious fishes, plants, gums, fuits, seeds, flowers, etc., could I reckon up on a sudden, some grievous malady, if not death itself! Some make mention of a thousand several poisons: but these are but trifles in respect. The greatest enemy to man is man, who by the devil's instigation is still ready to do mischief, hid own executioner, a wolf, a devil to himself and others (1). We are all brethren in Christ, or at least should be, members of one body, servants of one Lord, and yet no fiend can so torment, insult over, tyrannize, vex, as one man doth another. Let me not fall therefore (saith David, when wars, plague, famine were offered) into the hans of men, merciless and wicked men:

Vix sunt homines hoc nomine digni,

Quamque lupi saevae plus feritatis habent. (2)

[Though men in shape, they scarce deserve the name;

Their savagery doth put the wolves to shame]

We can most part foresee these epidemical diseases, and likely avoid them. Dearths, tempests, plagues, our astrologers foretell us; earthquakes, inundations, ruins of houses, consuming fires, come by little and little, or make some noise beforehand; but the knaveries, impostures, injuries, and villainies of men no art can avoid. We can keep our professed enemies from our cities by gates, walls, and towers, defend ourselves from thieves and robbers by watchfulness and weapons; but this malice of men, and their pernicious endeavours, no caution can divert, no vigilancy foresee, we have so many secret plots and devices to mischief one another.

__________________________________________________________________________________ English abstract: Language cannot be understood apart from evolution. It does not suffice to give an evolutionary explanation for a "language capacity"; it is the evolution of language itself that has to be explained, language in act and not in potentiality. In a nutshell, the question is not just to find out whether our ancestors spoke, since both then and now one can speak without saying much, and even parrots can speak—without language. What has to be investigated is what they were capable of saying and of conceiving.
