Two Mental Systems

According to Daniel Kahneman, Thinking, Fast and Slow ("The Law of Slow Numbers", 2011: 114):

 

"As I described earlier, System 1 is not prone to doubt. It suppresses ambiguity and spontaneously constructs stories that are as coherent as possible. Unless the message is immediately negated, the associations that it evokes will spread as if the message were true. System 2 is capable of doubt, because it can maintain incompatible possibilities at the same time. However, sustaining doubt is harder work than sliding into certainty. The law of small numbers is a manifestation of a general bias that favors certainty over doubt, which will turn up in man y guises in following chapters.

The strong bias toward believing that small samples closely resemble the population from which they are drawn is also part of a larger story: we are prone to exaggerate the consistency and coherence of what we see. The exaggerated faith of researchers in what can be learned from a few observations is closely related to the halo effect, the sense we often get that we know and understand a persona about whom we actually know very little. System 1 runs ahead of the facts in constructing a rich image on the basis of scraps of evidence. A machine for jumping to conclusions will act as if it believed in the law of small numbers. More generally, it will produce a representation of reality that makes too much sense."

La Evolución como Línea Progresiva

Comentario que pongo a este artículo sobre falacias del evolucionismo:

La respuesta breve es: por la falacia retrospectiva, que si bien es una falacia, también es fuente de conocimiento. Insight out of hindsight. Este artículo pertenece a esa escuela que dice que "la evolución no es una línea que lleva al hombre, sino un árbol multiforme, y todos los seres vivos están igualmente evolucionados." Cosa que es en parte cierta y en parte falsa—como lo de la línea progresiva de la evolución.

Comenta disintiendo con la tesis del artículo Antonio Carlos Andrada:

Pero si tomas un “árbol evolutivo” del linaje humano y eliminas todas las ‘ramas paralelas’ que solo comparten ascendencia con nosotros y consideras solo las transiciones ancestrales directas de nuestra espécie, terminamos todavía en una representación de una línea recta, ¿no? Entonces no está mal, solo incompleto si la intención es mostrar a todos los descendientes filogenéticos, pero si la intención es mostrar apenas las especies ancestrales de la evolución de nuestra especie, una línea recta es posible y correcta.

 

 

Y yo respondo:

Convengo con Antonio Carlos. Depende de lo que estés intentando representar. Una línea recta y progresiva desde lo simple a lo complejo también es una representación acertada (al menos para ciertos fines) del desarrollo de la complejidad. Por cierto, el artículo enfatiza que “todos los seres vivos estamos igualmente evolucionados” pero al hacerlo escamotea otra cuestión que sí busca representar el diagrama simple: que la mentalidad compleja se ha desarrollado más (es decir, es más compleja) en el ser humano que en otros parientes biológicos. O, puesto de otro modo, que sólo una mentalidad compleja puede trazar un esquema de su propia evolución, aunque sea para hacerlo de formas parcialmente incorrectas. Lástima tanto estudio esforzado de perspectivas científicas y sostenibles, para mezclarlas con empanadas mentales y delirios pseudocientíficos. Me temo que las doctrinas creacionistas le han trastocado a esta señora la correcta comprensión de la relación entre los fenómenos.

Los relatos no sólo entretienen sino que organizan la realidad, y la enmarcan y orientan la manera en que la interpretamos. La realidad es una batalla por el relato, ya se está viendo cómo hasta la prensa es consciente de "la importancia de hacerse con el relato." En qué momento se le ocurriría a Lyotard decretar la muerte de los Grandes Relatos. Están más vivos que nunca, y nos atacan a todas horas y por todos los medios.

—Bueno, los grandes relatos, y los pequeños. Nuestra vida cotidiana está también llena de ellos.

Proyección cerebral de la realidad percibida

 

Impresión de realidad: La percepción intelectiva en la epistemología de Zubiri

Según la epistemología de Xavier Zubiri, nuestra sensación de la realidad, la organización misma de nuestra percepción tanto del mundo externo como del mundo interno, no es "pura sensación", sino que está mediatizada por esquemas de representación y por relaciones semióticas importadas de actos cognitivos anteriores (y así más que conocer, reconocemos). En este artículo señalamos algunas concomitancias y analogías de este análisis epistemológico en los campos del cognitivismo y la neurociencia de la esfera anglosajona.

Prospección, Retrospección, Retroproyección, Retroalimentación

La cibernética, la neurología, la semiótica y la narratología han de emprender conjuntamente el estudio interdisciplinar de la consciencia entendida como la circulación retroalimentativa compleja entre distintos sistemas y circuitos cerebrales—así como entre distintas modalidades de representación en el cerebro. Se entenderán así mejor tanto el origen como la función biológica y ecológica de las representaciones, planes y narraciones, y la naturaleza emergente de la comprensión.

Prospection, Retrospection, Overhead Projection, Feedback

Cybernetics, neurology, semiotics and narratology must cooperate in the interdisciplinary study of consciousness understood as the complex feedback circulation between a number of different cerebral systems and circuits—and between different modes of representation in the brain. This will lead to a better understanding of both the origin and the biological and ecological function of representations, plans and narratives, and of the emergent nature of understanding.
