Abstract
What Remains Unclear: Collapse or Sustainability
This paper brings together some crucial insights from the complementary fields of evolutionary history and economics: on the hand, David Christian's conception of Big History, setting the growth of civilizations and population within a broader ecological conception of the use of resources and the lessons of a wider timeframe, and, on the other, Albert Bartlett's neo-Malthusian warnings about the economic and mathematical fallacies promoted under an industrial and scientific paradigm powered by fossil fuels. The paper concludes that as things stand the present industrial civilization and the associated population growth it has enabled are ecologically unsustainable.

English abstract:
Sociobiology of the Man in Black
This paper examines the character of the Man in Black in Oliver Goldsmith's 'Chinese Letters', focusing on the dialectics between selfishness and altruistic behavior shown in these stories and likewise in other characters and stories by Goldsmith. This is set in the context of contemporary economic and moral ideas, particularly those of Adam Smith. These ideas on human nature and attitudes are also related to our current understanding of human sociability and behaviour as explained by evolutionary theory and sociobiology.
