Chaucer's Pale Blue Dot

Moving towards the conclusion of Troilus and Criseyde—and ascending into space for an astronaut's view of our planet  —"This litel spot of erthe" -

The wraththe, as I began yow for to seye,

Of Troilus, the Grekes boughten dere;

For thousandes his hondes maden deye,

As he that was with-outen any pere,

Save Ector, in his tyme, as I can here.

But weylaway, save only goddes wille,

Dispitously him slough the fiers Achille.

And whan that he was slayn in this manere

His lighte goost ful blisfully is went

Up to the holownesse of the seventh spere,

In convers letinge every element;

And ther he saugh, with ful avysement,

The erratik sterres, herkeninge armonye

With sownes fulle of hevenish melodye.

And down from thennes faste he gan avyse

This litel spot of erthe, that with the see

Embraced is, and fully gan despyse

This wrecched world, and held al vanitee

To respect of the pleyn felicitee

That is in hevene above; and at the laste,

Ther he was slayn, his loking doun he caste;

And in him-self he lough right at the wo

Of hem that wepten for his deeth so faste;

And dampned al our werk that folweth so

The blinde lust, the which that may not laste

And sholden al our herte on hevene caste,

And forth he wente, shortly for to telle,

Ther as Mercurie sorted him to dwelle.

English abstract:

 The Discovery of Immense Space and of Infinite Time

The discovery of the immensity of cosmic space was a gradual discovery of modern astronomy. A conception of the immensity of time was nonetheless limited by the difficulty of establishing a scientific approach to the remote past or future, while the religious tradition set a limit to time in the creative action of God. The first scientific conception of a non-static universe led to a theory — the Big Bang theory — which in a sense also partakes of a finite conception of time. But in contemporary physics, facing the problem of the multiverse, time also tends, beyond the immensity of cosmic proportions, towards an infinite past and future, without any conceivable limit either for science or for imagination.

Redes, Regiones y Público (Networks, Regions, and Audiences)

Networks, Regions, and Audiences

 In 'The Presentation of the Self in Everyday Life' Erving Goffman puts forward a dramatistic theory of public space, defined interactionally in relation to specific groups and social activities, and redefines from this standpoint such concepts as personal identity and roles, teamwork and cooperation, or the relation between roles and regions of interactional space. This paper further develops Goffman's interactional analysis and extends it to the virtual space of the Internet and to the presentation of social identities in blogs and online social networking sites, concentrating on the implications for the concepts of regions, interactional participants, and audiences.

II Seminario HERAF
