Saul Bellow Interview





"True individuality is becoming a scarce commodity.    This is tragic because it means that something is happening in our life, that the situation is too revolutionary, that the conditions are too oppressive, that modern existence is no longer a congenial milieu for individuality. Sometimes it's a question wheter there is any such thing. I think people sometimes are happy, and this is—in whatever form you'd fight it even if it seems to be a liberating form, tends to be, a totalitarian influence in modern life—people are happy to dispense with this and find something that they can more readily identify with, which seems to reflect individuality but which is, in reality, the very opposite of individuality, which is a kind of stamping out of individuality."
