The Cavern in the Brain: Language as Virtual Reality
This paper discusses the notion of human reality as a virtual
environment generated by the brain. Due to the human brain's structure,
its evolutionary history, and the simultaneous co-evolution of the
human brain and cognition with the development of language, our
environment is shaped to a great degree by culturally acquired
cognition and linguistic structures. Deacon's theories in this respect
are discussed in relation to other current contributions (Kenneally,
Bickerton, Jaynes, Chomsky).
