Intra mittendo, vel extra mittendo

Sobre el clásico debate sobre la percepción visual: si vemos porque nos llegan imágenes del exterior que recibimos por los ojos, o si las proyectamos desde la mente por los ojos a modo de cámaras de cine:

Robert Burton, Anatomy of Melancholy (I.I.2.6, "Of the Sensible Soul"):

To the sight three things are required, the object, the organ, and the medium. The object in general is visible, or that which is to be seen, as colours, and all shining bodies. The medium is the illumination of the air which comes from light (1), commonly called diaphanum; for in dark we cannot see. The organ is the eye, and chiefly the apple of it, which by those optic nerves, concurring both in one, conveys the sight to the common sense. Betwixt the organ and object a true distance is required, that it be not too near, or too far off. Many excellent questions appertain to this sense, discussed by philosophers: s whether this sight be caused intra mittendo, vel extra mittendo, etc., by receiving in the visible species, or sending of them out, which Plato (2), Plutarch (3), Macrobius (4), Lactantius (5), and others dispute. And besides it is the subject of the perspectives, of which Alhazen the Arabian, Vitellio, Roger Bacon, Baptista Porta, Guidus Ubaldus, Aquilonius, etc., have written whole volumes.

La solución al dilema no es tan obvia como podría parecer (y de ahí los debates), pues en el asunto de la percepción física, como en el de la conceptualización de la realidad, es grande el papel constructivo del cerebro a la hora de generar las imágenes y mapas mentales de lo que percibimos como "si estuviese objetivamente allí", y la realidad tiene mucho, en los dos casos, de expectativa autocumplida.  La realidad por la que navegamos a pie o mentalmente, la realidad que vemos como si no la tuviésemos en el fondo de la retina, o la realidad social e interaccional, el mundo mental de convenciones solidificadas e instituciones en el que vivimos, una realidad humana que también es, a la vez, una expectativa autocumplida.
