Fiction as Mind Sculpture: On 'A Work of Art'
English Abstract: This is a commentary on James Blish's science fiction story 'A Work of Art', analyzing its implications as a reflection on future aesthetic developments as a consequence of the technologies of virtual reality and artificial intelligence. The reflexive aspects of Blish's modernist narrative technique are examined as a step in an argument relating the 'mind sculpture' of narrative fiction and immersive reading to other virtual dimensions of human experience and cognition.
