Science and Literature: Some Critical Parameters

This paper has a double aim: to draw a general outline or the critical reflection on the relationship between science and literature in the past, and to classify the possible modes of inquiry into this subject at present. The main focus falls on some representative discussions of the relationship between science and literature in mid-20th-century theorists (I. A. Richards, Max Eastman, Aldous Huxley, Roland Barthes...). I conclude that no 'true' relation between science and literature can be defined once and forever, due to several reasons. The first is that the relationships that we effectively discern change with time. Therefore, a definition of the relationship between literature and science must be a history of the relationship between literature and science. Moreover, as both science and criticism develop, we manage to discern new kinds of relationships between both disciplines. And great writers constantly appear and modify through their work the panorama we tried to describe. The diverging channels of of science and literature are the result of the division and specialization of labour and discourse that we call 'progress'. New scientific perspectives on literature, new literature which takes scientific doctrine in stride, or new accounts of the way in which science is still 'poetic' are also the result of this division of discourses, and a further complication of their relationship.

Introducción a la problemática de las relaciones entre ciencia y literatura, en especial al panorama de mediados del siglo XX, intentando establecer una tipología de las diversas relaciones posibles. A la vez se exponen críticamente algunas de las teorías más influyentes sobre el particular formuladas por críticos de la época (Richards, Eastman, Huxley, Barthes...) que representan diferentes perspectivas posibles sobre la cuestión. Se concluye de este examen de que no puede sentarse como "cierta" ninguna teoría determinada sobre la relación entre la ciencia y la literatura, por diversas razones. Primero, las relaciones que discernimos cambian con el tiempo. Por tanto, una definición de la relación entre ciencia y literatura debería ser una historia de la relación entre ciencia y literatura. Además, a medida que se desarrollan la ciencia y la teoría crítica, nos hacemos capaces de discernir nuevos tipos de relaciones entre ambas disciplinas. Y los grandes escritores que continuamente aparecen desarrollan nuevas relaciones y cambian con su obra el panorama que describimos. Los canales divergentes de la ciencia y la literatura son resultado de la especialización del trabajo y del discurso que llamamos 'progreso'. Las nuevas perspectivas científicas sobre la literatura, la nueva literatura que asimila las doctrinas científicas, o los nuevos estudios críticos sobre la medida en que la ciencia es todavía "poética" son también resultado de esta especialización del discurso, y llevan a una complicación ulterior de las relaciones entre ciencia y literatura.
